This week’s goal
Understand why some media files were easier on the server than others.
What I actually did
I used the Jellyfin dashboard while playing a few different files. This was more useful than guessing.
Some files played with very little server effort. Others needed conversion, which used more CPU and made the setup feel less efficient.
The useful lesson was simple: playback problems are not always a server problem. The client device, file format, subtitles, and quality settings all matter.
What broke, or nearly did
I nearly used this as an excuse to buy stronger hardware.
Then I tested the same file on another client and it worked much better.
That was useful, but also deeply rude to my shopping basket.
What I’m keeping
- Check playback mode first
- Test more than one client
- Keep file formats boring where possible
- Upgrade hardware only after checking the basics
SmallGrid takeaway
Before spending money, check what Jellyfin is actually doing. Sometimes the cheapest upgrade is using the right client or a more compatible file.
