This week’s goal
Make the whole setup easier to explain.
This is a useful test. If I cannot explain the setup in a few sentences, I have either built something too complicated or I am trying to justify a decision I made at 11:30pm.
What I actually did
I reduced the mental model to:
- one server
- one main media service
- clear storage paths
- private remote access
- local backup
- written recovery notes
That is the real setup. Everything else is either future work or decoration.
This helped separate the useful bits from the “I saw this on Reddit and became briefly convinced it was essential” bits.
What broke, or nearly did
I noticed a few notes that sounded more impressive than useful.
That is a warning sign. A small homelab should not need marketing language to justify itself.
What I’m keeping
- Plain-language architecture notes
- A short list of live services
- A separate future ideas list
- Less pretending that planned work is finished work
SmallGrid takeaway
If the setup is hard to explain, simplify the setup or simplify the explanation. Ideally both. A good beginner homelab should make sense when read back cold.
